Ralph Rapson Travelling Fellowship 2021

The Rapson prompt for 2021 was to design a community health hub in Willmar, MN. I wanted to use this opportunity to try a new way of drawing. The idea was to communicate as much info as I can through one big diagram. Due to the vertical nature of my building I thought it best to go with an exploded axon drawing.

Exploded Axon Diagram

After I was happy with modeling, I saved a copy of the sketchup file and started pulling things apart. I had a rough idea of what I wanted to showcase going in so it was just a matter of getting things to show well without clipping or overlapping objects. Once I was happy with the layout I took the exported image to illustrator and added the linework and annotations.

“This proposal, at its core, is an all-inclusive food production and processing compound.”

Project Description and Floor Plans

These plans are cut straight out of sketchup. I exported a linework layer and a shadows layer and multiplied them in photoshop. The poche was done in illustrator. I wanted to keep these plans simple since most of the story telling was done with the axon diagram.

“[this project] leverages the existing resources and workforce to create a more resilient system of food production.”

Diagrams

These diagrams are meant to provide additional context to the building and briefly explain the big concept of aquaponics. The vicinity map is meant to show local restaurants and grocers that are synergistic our programing. Lastly the site diagram is there to show we comply with the 15k sq ft site requirement.
