What would an elementary school look like in 2040? For me, it’s a school that’s fully integrated with it’s community. A place that’s used after school hours and year round. One that leverages human capital by allowing elders in the neighborhood to actively participate in the curriculum. Finally, a place where urban farming and food production is seamlessly woven into the day to day operations.

Bottom Up Design

I wanted to explore a ground up model of design by building a comprehensive schedule. By imagining the day to day schedule for each user group, I am able to identify at a glance where their schedules overlap, and there by, focus the design work in those spaces.

Site Plan

The site is grounded on both ends by a circle motif which represents coming together and wholeness. The space in the middle is reserved for play and is lined with a series of orthogonal sheds that provides many much needed amenities to the community. The sheds are transparent in design and are easily accessed on both the north and south side of the site.
